The Iron Horse Bicycle Race is an amazing annual event that brings thousands of people to Silverton at the crack of dawn to post up on main street and await the arrival of the first riders coming off Molass Pass as they cruise into town. At just under 50 miles in distance, this is hardly one of the longer races that we host in our area, but when you consider that riders will have to ascend nearly 5,000 vertical feet to summit both Coalbank and Molass Passes before dropping into Silverton you start to realize what a challenge this is.
This race was originally inspired by a railway employee who thought he just might be able to beat the train from Durango to Silverton. Then, in 1971 it became an annual event hosting hundreds, if not thousands of riders. Last year’s event was won by Swirbul Keegan with a time of 2 hours and 29 minutes….. well before the train arrived at noon-thirty-ish. A full list of the results can be found here 2015 results.

The Golden Block Brewery is located on the 1200 block of Greene Street which puts us about 2 blocks short of the finish line and exactly where the racers will need your inspiration the most! Come early and post up out front for one of the best seats in town! And don’t be shy about buying one of the riders an ice cold craft beer… they’ll need one (or three.)
Keep in mind that Highway 550 will be closed between Silverton and Durango Mountain Resort between 8am and 1pm so make proper arrangements if you plan on traveling here from the south.
Every time the Iron Horse bicycle race comes to town we have an awesome time and really enjoy all the people we get to meet. I’m sure this year will be the best yet!
